Looks Far Woman is a focused and immersive album by cellist and composerAliya Ultan, structured as a cycle of six elemental “songs” that unfold at theintersection of composition, dream logic, and ritual practice. Drawing from aperiod of physical and emotional exhaustion, Ultan works with breath andsustained attention as compositional materials, creating music that inhabits ahypnagogic threshold — the liminal space between waking and sleep whereperception softens and inner worlds surface. Guided by the figure of “Looks FarWoman,” a seer and caretaker within Ultan’s personal cosmology, the albumtraces a quiet arc of departure, repair, and return. Recorded just before a majorgeographic and psychic shift in Ultan’s life, the record resists virtuosity in favorof patience, restraint, and deep listening. Looks Far Woman was recorded, mixed, and produced by Randall Dunn, and marks a striking statement from anemerging composer working at the edges of contemporary experimental music.
