The record reimagines her 2006 debut Real Life across ten new versions of its songs, developed over two decades of live performance and continual reinvention. These arrangements have been shaped on stage and refined through years of collaboration, now brought into full form with a rotating cast of musicians who have helped define her sound. Some interpretations are subtle refinements; others radically transform the originals. Across the album, Joan is joined by Will Graefe, Jeremy Gustin, Tony Scherr, Parker Kindred, Danny Blume, Krystle Warren, Oren Bloedow, Thomas Bartlett, and Iggy Pop. Joan Wasser—known professionally as Joan As Police Woman—is a New York-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known for blending soul, indie rock, and experimental pop into a distinctive voice. Across a career spanning more than a decade, she has released ten studio albums, two cover albums, and an anthology, and is widely respected for her collaborative work. Beyond her solo output, she performs with Iggy Pop’s touring band and participates in Damon Albarn’s Africa Express, and has worked with artists including Tony Allen, Lou Reed, Anohni & The Johnsons, Meshell Ndegeocello, Rufus Wainwright, John Cale, and David Byrne.
