The L.A. Metal movement rose rapidly thanks to strong support from record labels scouting in California, quickly becoming a major force that rivaled the British metal scene. For the first time since the global success of Hotel California, Los Angeles became the center of attention in rock and metal.
Many American bands moved to California, drawn by new opportunities and a vibrant music scene. Unlike the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), L.A. Metal developed a flashier, more accessible style that attracted a new audience and gradually pushed the British movement into decline. In this highly competitive environment, bands were forced to constantly improve and stand out by performing relentlessly in small clubs. Among the groups that emerged, Hurricane took a more traditional and musical approach compared to the glam excess of many contemporaries.
The band was built around guitarist Robert Sarzo and bassist Tony Cavazo, both already experienced musicians. After a long selection process, vocalist Kelly Hansen was chosen, and drummer Jay Schellen completed the lineup. Their first EP, Take What You Want (1985), produced by Kevin Beamish, helped them gain attention and eventually opened the door to Enigma Records, despite several setbacks including label problems and internal tensions. After signing with Enigma, the band worked with major producers Bob Ezrin and Mike Clink, which allowed them to refine their sound and create a more ambitious and mature album, Over The Edge.
The resulting record captured the spirit of the American West Coast with powerful melodies, energetic hard rock, and more experimental elements. Highlights included a cover of Alice Cooper’s classic “I’m Eighteen” and tracks mixing intensity with humor. The album is remembered as a strong example of polished, heartfelt West Coast hard rock that has stood the test of time.
