Brass bands have been around as long as there have been wind instruments. Trombones brought down the walls of Jericho, and the infamous Janissaries put their enemies to flight with brass music.
Today there are wedding orchestras in the Balkans, mariachi bands in Mexico, freaky funeral bands on the streets of New Orleans, carnival orchestras in the Rhineland, frenetic processional drumming in southern Italy, speed polka troupes in Texas, klezmer brass bands in the Jewish diaspora and much more. Last but not least, the brass band is the cradle of jazz. So there is hardly a phenomenon that spans the globe and time more than the brass band.
However, a Tiny Brass Band reduced to four members like Magnus Mehl's is an absolute exception. Magnus Mehl's Tiny Brass Band is all the more special because it doesn't sound tiny at all, but packs a powerful punch.
This is partly due to the bandleader's concept, but also to the selected players of the lively quartet. From the very beginning, Magnus Mehl's idea was to create a mobile jazz group without the classic backing of double bass and piano. He tried out various formations, all of which worked on their own, but did not yet lead to the result that Mehl ultimately had in mind. He knew that the crux of the matter was to find the right people with whom he could march into the horizon. With trumpeter Christian Mehler, tuba player Johannes Bär and his brother Ferenc Mehl on drums, the saxophonist finally found a team with whom he could realize his ideas with musical and human precision.
Small band big time! With a maximum of sincerity and authenticity, the Tiny Brass Band needs very little to unleash a pressure wave with four instruments and an incredible before-and-after effect. On 'Live', Magnus Mehl and his Tiny Brass Band set a course that leads to surprising destinations with unobtrusive emphasis.
