Smash It Up

Release Year

First Release

Everyone thought ‘Smash It Up’ would be the Damned’s breakthrough record as it had everything a hit single needed. However, the BBC did not like the title, despite the humorous and obviously tongue-in-cheek nature of the lyrics. Stymied by the Beeb, who refused to play this punk rock call to arms, ‘Smash It Up’ nevertheless made #35 in the UK charts and became a Damned anthem. To this day it is a hit in the hearts of Damned fans worldwide, with its glorious melody and rousing chorus. It has replaced ‘New Rose’ as the encore of choice, guaranteed to send ’em home spitting. Still touring to this day, the Damned are the last of the class of ’77 left functioning. Catch them at a dancehall near you.
