Jackie Ross (born in St. Louis), a Chicago female singer, was scouted by Sam Cooke and debuted on his SAR Records in 1962, and later sang in Syl Johnson's band. In 1964, she signed with the prestigious Chess label and released the big hit "Selfish One". After that, she released her album on Brunswick and other labels, and in 1980, she released an album produced by James Van Lear, a talented producer from the same city, on his Golden Ear Records. Starting with the extremely comfortable modern/crossover soul "The World Needs More People Like You", the album is packed with songs from upbeat to slow, including the groovy upbeat "I Who Have Nothing", a cover of The O'Jays' "You Got Your Hooks In Me", and a cover of The Stylistics' famous "Betcha By Golly Wow", which was discovered to use the exact same backing track as the version by the Lovelights from Chicago. This album is sure to satisfy fans of both traditional soul and rare groove.
